Mogul River

Mogul River is based on a fictional railroad in Northern Ontario.

It is a railroad that serves northern communities and industries anchored by the city of SOO and its main yard. The era is not specific but most locomotives and rolling stock are from the ‘80s onward and represent some memory of mine growing up in Ontario. Be aware, I have too many locomotives (and I don’t care!). All turnouts, but one, on the mainline are remote (push button or Digitrax controlled), all other turnouts are manual. The layout and locomotives are DCC controlled by Digitrax (I have lots of throttles). A comfy crew lounge is conveniently located beside the layout.

We operate essentially three (3) trains. Train 41 serves H&S Wood Products, Train 43 serves St. Mary’s and the big pulp & paper plant, and Train 45 (the Interchange) brings/takes cars from the interchange. The SOO Yard Switcher breaks-up cars arriving in SOO Yard and handles the local industries in SOO. The layout is designed keep operators (three-six) busy switching industries (in addition to the forementioned pulp & paper plant other main industries include H&S Wood Products, Keller Manufacturing plus numerous other companies served by rail). Every train moves through SOO Yard (the yard can keep two folks busy) before it reaches its destination. St. Mary’s Yard keeps another couple of folks busy (engineer & conductor just like SOO Yard). We do not use a timetable but every car movement is controlled by car cards. Their bills of lading are dictated by the industry served. Usual operations take between two to three hours.
